What Happened Here?

For those that do know about this site, things look a bit different and there is a lot missing.

In fact, everything that was on the previous site is gone baby, gone.

Now, why is that?

Well, it’s simple really: I got hacked.

Okay, not hacked so much as the site was infected with malicious content. I have only myself to blame in this. I was lazy, pure and simple.

I never updated WordPress like I should have. Any vulnerabilities that existed were wide open to be exploited and someone out there noticed and took advantage.

I also rarely checked on the site. So it took an email from Google telling me that my site will be flagged as unsafe. This flagging was due to them finding ‘malware’ on my site. Malware! Damnit.

Once I was informed, I immediately inspected the file structure and lo, there be dragons!  What I found were hundreds of html pages with names based on pages that already existed in the file structure. These pages were injected into my site somehow and either contained malicous code that Google didn’t like or it could just have been the naming pattern of these pages that clued them.

Either way, I deleted the entire file system and database. I suppose I could have left the database as that wasn’t infected, but I felt it should all go.

As it stands now, I shall be at least a bit more careful with this clean install of WordPress and a few extra security measures.

Maybe I’ll even post occassionally.
